November 2012 Update

Greetings!

I will have a newsletter for November forthcoming. However, in the meantime, I did want to send the following message:

Recently, Sandy the Storm (aka Frankenstorm, Megastorm, Superstorm) paid us, our neighbors, and millions of people a rather unwelcome visit. She tore through cities, towns, villages, countrysides and seasides, leaving stunned residents and animals in her wake.

Among the many things we learn from such powerful examples of Mother Nature is to recognize and appreciate what we have while we have it. Suddenly, that which we take for granted is gone; changed forever.

A few days before the storm I had gotten a new phone with a camera and I photographed magnificent trees, in full autumnal colors. The oranges, magentas, reds, and yellows were amazingly vibrant. Little did I know I would be "shooting" them for the last time. As these magnificent giants now lie as logs, their powerful majesty felled by the storm, I can only be grateful to have had the good sense to appreciate them while they were upright.

We all need to pay close attention to that which we have, as life is so fleeting. So, whether it is appreciating each moment, photographing a tree, flower, lake, pet or person; in your mind's eye or with a camera; give yourself the opportunity to stop and breathe in the joy of bring where you are at this moment.

I look forward to being "connected" again --I hope before too long. Thanks to all of you who have reached out to me and my family, inquiring about our well being. I am grateful to all of you. May we all be safe from harm. Sincerely, Dale

    JUMPSTART

WE CAN ALL ADDRESS THE LITERACY CRISIS IN THIS COUNTRY. Jumpstart is a national early education nonprofit organization that pairs well-trained, caring adults with underserved preschoolers who live in poverty in year long mentoring relationships. I was honored to be Jumpstart's Read for the Record's National Spokesperson on NBC's Today Show this past Fall and to have moderated a panel of Jumpstart's founders on February 22nd at the Yale Club in NYC. Jumpstart's Scribbles to Novels www.jstart.org/scribblesnyc, event took place on May 8th at Cipriani Wall Street. We were joined by Wes Moore, Tina Fey (who was interviewed by Gayle King) and other acclaimed and entertaining authors who celebrate the written word and support Jumpstart's programming in the tri-state area and around the country.

Please help to spread the word about the mission of Jumpstart and the remarkable strides being made in low income neighborhoods every day. Please, if you can, contribute by clicking on www.jstart.org/donate www.jstart.org/donate. There is something that every single one of us can do to help those less fortunate. Over one million children live below the poverty level in the U.S. This shameful situation must change. Each of us has a responsibility to repair our world. Let us eliminate the 2-year achievement gap that exists between children from low income and those from middle income neighborhoods when they begin kindergarten!
